CERACOAT / Questions & Answers

Good questions. Clear answers.

An introduction to our technologies, surface preparation and application. Always follow the instructions for your particular product.

What is nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology concerns materials and structures at very small scales, commonly about 1 to 100 nanometres. In coatings, engineering the structure of a thin layer can change how a surface interacts with liquids, dirt and its surroundings.

Why develop nanotechnology?

Controlling material structure can help create useful properties with small amounts of material. Research includes surface protection, clean energy, water treatment, health and electronics. Environmental benefits depend on the particular material, process and application.

Where is nanotechnology developed?

Research takes place worldwide in universities, public institutes and private companies. Ceracoat carries out its own formulation research, development and production in Switzerland.

What do ‘top-down’ and ‘bottom-up’ mean?

Top-down methods refine or structure a larger material, while bottom-up methods bring smaller building blocks together. Both approaches are used in nanotechnology. The best method depends on the material and the desired function.

Which country leads in nanotechnology?

There is no single leader in every field. Expertise is spread across countries, research institutes and industries, and the answer depends on the particular technology being considered.

Are nanotechnology products safe and environmentally friendly?

Safety depends on the specific formulation, exposure and way a product is used. ‘Nano’ or ‘water-based’ alone is not a safety guarantee. Follow the product label, application instructions and safety data sheet, and use the protective measures specified for that product. Contact us if you need documentation for a professional application.

How do Ceracoat coatings work?

Each product is formulated for a particular substrate and purpose. Many form a thin functional layer that helps reduce the adhesion or penetration of liquids and dirt, making later cleaning easier. Other products, such as our hydrophilic self-cleaning solar coating, use a different surface mechanism.

What benefits can a coating provide?

Depending on the product, benefits may include easier cleaning, reduced dirt or liquid absorption, surface renovation, or specialised protection. Choose the product for the surface and the required result; the same claims do not apply to every coating.

Will a coating change the appearance or feel of a surface?

Many Ceracoat products are designed to be visually unobtrusive, but the result depends on the material and formulation. Some care products intentionally renovate colour or add gloss. Test a small, inconspicuous area and follow the relevant instructions.

Does correct application matter?

Yes. Surface compatibility, preparation, the amount applied, drying or curing time and the surrounding conditions all influence performance. Follow the instructions for the specific product, including any requirements concerning existing coatings. Application methods differ between products.

How is Ceracoat different from other surface treatments?

Ceracoat offers formulations for different materials and functions. Some combine cleaning, renovation and protection; others are specialised coatings. Compare products by their intended substrate, application method, documented performance and maintenance requirements rather than the word ‘nano’ alone.

How long does a Ceracoat coating last?

There is no single lifetime for the whole range. Durability depends on the product, substrate, abrasion, washing, weather and correct application. Refer to the individual product information or ask us about your operating conditions.

How should I compare the cost of coatings?

Consider the area treated, consumption, expected service life, application work and future cleaning or reapplication needs. The bottle price alone does not describe the total cost of protecting a surface. We can help assess a product for your application.

What is the difference between hydrophobic and hydrophilic coatings?

Hydrophobic coatings encourage water to bead and roll away. Hydrophilic coatings encourage it to spread. Both can be useful, but for different applications. Ceracoat’s self-cleaning solar coating is hydrophilic; do not substitute a water-repellent treatment without checking suitability.
